One of You Shall Betray Me
One of You Shall Betray Me, by Daud Akhriev (Photo by Baron Williams) |
One of You Shall Betray Me is Daud Akhriev's portrayal of the disciples protesting Jesus' prophecy. The artist has used a Renaissance convention of silhouetting the most important figure against a spacious window or door, thus framing him in light for emphasis. Judas can be found with his sack of bribe money. The painting is done in egg tempera on poplar panel.
The Nativity
The Nativity, by Daud Akhriev (Photo by Baron Williams) |
A nativity is probably the second most popular scene from the life of Christ, and one painted several times by Daud Akhriev (see below) because of the universality of the image and because it combines all his favorite elements of a painting--human figures with a variety of emotions, landscape, drapery, and animals. The painting is done in egg tempera, a very colorfast mixture of egg yolk, vinegar and powdered pigment. Because it is slightly more brittle than oil paint, egg tempera must always be painted on board and not canvas.
Daud Akhriev
Born in 1959, Daud Akhriev is married to artist Melissa Hefferlin, a Collegedale native whom he met while they were both studying at the Repin Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1991. Daud accompanied Melissa to the United States later that same year.
Daud’s nationality is Ingushi, a people from the northern Caucasus Mountains, between the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Ingushi worldwide population is approximately three million, and they have an indigenous language which is not traceable to major language groups.
